Having both ultra fair and sensitive skin often means sunburn pretty quickly for my girls and me if we do not apply sunscreen before we head outside. Trying to be safe in the sun and protect my family from harmful chemicals can be a balancing act. There are so many products out there, each claiming to be the best, but when you look at the ingredient list, there are unpronounceable names and ingredients that are on the FDA watch-list. I have also learned to watch out for association “recommendations”. As it turns out, some dermatologic foundations will give their seal of recommendation following a review and a large donation from the manufacturer. When it comes to skin safety, be sure to do the research and know what you are looking for. On my quest to find a safe, effective sunscreen for my family, I came across TruKid. TruKid offers a full line of all-natural body care products for children (and family, too!). Their products have many organic ingredients, are non-chemical and are clearly labeled. I received a two-ounce bottle of the TruKid Sunny Days Daily SPF 30+ in exchange for my honest opinion.
What did I think?
The TruKid Sunny Days Daily SPF 30+ came with a list of freebies that I love: paraben-free, gluten-free, BPA-free and phthalate-free! In addition to that, the products are eco-friendly and biodegradable – hooray! Now, some of you might be wondering why, as an incredibly pale, easily burned person, would I use only SPF 30 and not go for something higher. Well, I will tell you why. A higher number does not necessarily mean higher protection. When you are looking for a good sunscreen, you should look for one that is broad spectrum, what that means is, it blocks not only UVA rays, but also UVB. I would take a lower SPF rating with a broad-spectrum rating than a high SPF number and only UVA coverage any day. The TruKid sunscreen is broad spectrum as well as uses non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient (there is controversy on this topic in the U.S., however research in Canada is slightly more progressive and seems to suggest we should avoid nano zinc oxide sunscreen).
The TruKids Sunny Days Daily SPF 30+ easily meets my requirements for chemical-free, eco-friendly and gluten-free safe for the kiddos. But what about how it works? Well ladies and gents, it works great! In fact, we have had some of the sunniest, hottest days in Wisconsin this year in the last week and to beat the heat, we have been playing outside in the pool and sprinkler, which of course means exposed skin! This sunscreen lotion applies evenly and smoothly. It has been great on our sensitive skin leaving behind no rash, redness or breakouts. I love that it has a very light and fresh citrus scent that is nonintrusive. We reapplied every 40 minutes or so and have escaped any sunburn or redness unscathed this last week!
TruKid Sunny Days Daily SPF 30+ sunscreen is one I would recommend for everyone. It really works for those of us in the fair-skinned department and I love that it is chemical-free. The two-ounce size is perfect for throwing in your purse or diaper bag for a quick application. TruKid also offers a sunscreen body stick, which would be wonderful for faster, face application when your kiddos are ready to run into the pool.
