The family road trip. It is a rite of passage, right? The kids in the backseat asking like clockwork if you have arrived yet and the parents responding with “No, we just left 10 minutes ago and it is a 10-hour drive!” For many, in-car movie systems, tablets and cell phones have becomes the wave of the future for mesmerizing kids on long car trips. And while we definitely do let the kids play on electronics in the car, we do still try to limit it and encourage reading, coloring, etc. But what about bringing in one of our favorite family activities in a mobile version? Board games! Winning Moves USA manufactures an incredible line of family-friendly board games, card games and puzzles that we play with all the time – and I just figured out that they have many games that are also car-friendly, too! We received four card games that are keeping our kiddos busier in the car for rides, playing at home on their own and giving us things to do when we are waiting in exchange for my honest opinion.
What did I think?
The card game packs available from Winning Moves USA are amazing! The boxes are small, contain all the cards and instructions and close neatly for easy transport and storage. I can throw a box of cards into my purse and we are ready for a mobile game anytime, anywhere!
Winning Moves USA has many card games that are all cover different ages, presences and learning abilities. The games we received will be used for many years to come!
Touring – in this fast-paced card game, kids (ages 7 and up recommended) and adults race to reach a particular score for a “tour”. You have speed cards and need to play them in order to get to that desired number – but WATCH OUT! If one of your opponents has the power – they can cause you major penalties with bad breaks, flat tires or worse! This is a game that we had to play with the girls if we were strictly adhering to the rules (plus adding to 550 is still a bit tricky for Miss Goose!), but they found their own variation in the car and had a blast!
Connect 4 & More – this amazing tile-style version of a classic game brings a new fun twist that everyone is sure to love! By introducing patterns, and more ways to win, there is more strategy than ever before. The girls like to set this up in the car by clearing the space between their seats and getting a game going. The heavy-duty cardboard pieces are sturdy enough to not move about with some movement in the car, but I will warn you – a heavy slam on the breaks and the tiles will fly! This game was a hit when we needed to head inside from a waterpark to wait out a rainstorm. Kept the girls busy and engaged and our phones kept their charge since the girls weren’t playing games on them!
Scattergories: The Card Game – Admittedly, this one is more for mom and dad than the girls since their repertoire is not quite there to fully engage. But this game is a fun and fast version of a game we love to play together. We can play a “light” version of it while in traffic jams and will ad lib – we flip two cards and then will go back forth naming as many that meet the category/letter requirements until one runs out of answers. It is awesome for throwing into my purse and taking over to friends’ houses for a quick game night while the kiddos play!
Littlest Pet Shop Wild Card – Simply from having the adorable pets and Blythe from LPS on the box, the girls declared this their favorite game and have taken to playing it constantly. The rules included in the box have variations for three different versions, but the one the girls took to the easiest has rules that mimic an old “Hearts” game that I used to play on our old DOS computer as a child. They love to play the Blythe Wild Card and giggle when they snap up 4’s and 5’s with those. This game has really improved their single number addition skills, as well as sportsmanship as they learn they have little control over the outcome of each hand. A definite fun game that kids love!
As always, Winning Moves USA has put out another great round of well-made games that have enhanced our family game nights. These card games are great for playing on the go or promoting self-sufficiency for the girls as they can easily set up these games themselves!
