When it comes to eating and nutrition – we are very big on eating natural, safe and healthy foods. That being said, I do believe in the Mary Poppins’ line “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” Not that we are eating table sugar by the spoonful, but more in the sense that a little bit of something less than healthy once in a while, is not necessarily a bad thing! We do try to make good decisions when eating “on the wild side” and one of the things we love to nosh on is potato chips! In the past, both hubby and I have had a not-so-secret love affair with kettle chips, but that has all changed now that we have discovered Tyrrell’s Hand Cooked English Chips. We received an assortment of hand cooked English Chips in exchange for our honest opinions and not only do we love them, but we have left our kettle chip ways behind!
What did I think?
Before now, when it came to a strictly snack chip (versus ones for dipping, salsas, etc) – we were an almost exclusive kettle chip family, but I can say that we have all come over to the hand cooked English chip side of things now! These chips from Tyrrell’s are crispy, perfectly seasoned and delightful! Available in seven incredible flavors – you can try a new flavor of English chips (or crisps if you are from the Motherland) every day of the week, for, well – a week!
I love that Tyrrell’s English Chips are made with all-natural ingredients and are naturally gluten-free, making them a safe snacking option for Miss LadyBug and me. They are also vegan and you do not need an advanced degree to read the ingredients. Seriously – the Sea Salt English chips have just three ingredients: potatoes, sunflower oil and sea salt! I wish more companies would take note that you do not need to add crazy compounds and fillers to something as simple and wonderful as a potato chip!
So speaking of the sea salt potato chips, like I said, seven flavors and here they are:
Lightly Sea Salted: Light, crisp and the perfect potato chip for squelching that salty craving. These are perfectly salted and quite tasty! The bag was empty very quickly – I am suspicious of how many Miss LadyBug ate – her little hands dashed into the bag quite a bit!
Veg Chips: Ok, ok – so now we’re stepping out of the potato genre of chips and into the veggies, but I promise you will love these! Featuring carrots, parsnips, and beetroot – these color and crispy chips add some classiness to your chip palette. Eat them – you won’t regret it!
Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper: This flavor was wonderful! Taking what was already great about the Lightly Sea Salted flavor and dashing it with bits of black pepper brings it to a new level of awesome! I have liked salt and pepper chips in the past, but I loved these!
Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar: Mysteriously, these English chips disappeared and I only was able to grab one single crisp before they were gone. Usually I am not a salt and vinegar chip type of gal – but I think the use of cider vinegar really made a difference and I found my one single chip to be tasty! Hubby and Miss LadyBug who, jointly, devoured the bag in one sitting declared these to be the best salt and vinegar potato chips that they have had the pleasure of eating.
Sweet Chili & Red Pepper: Sweet, salty and spicy! These chips have the 3-S’s down pat. With the first few bites, you are left thinking you just have a delicious chip with a hint of heat, but very flavorful. Eat a few more and you realize that there is a slow burn building in the back of your mouth. Keep a glass of milk on standby and you are good to go! These chips are great!
Worcestershire Sauce & Sundried Tomato: These English chips were hubby’s favorite of the bunch (although it was a tough call for him since he really, really, REALLY loves the salt and vinegar ones, too). Smoky, sweet and sharp – we have another set of S’s to describe Tyrrell’s! The tangy sundried tomato flavor blends perfectly with the smoky flavors of classic Worcestershire sauce in way that sings in your mouth. These may well be the perfect side to a sandwich – much more testing of these delightful chips will ensue to determine!
Mature Cheddar & Chives: Now, these were MY favorite of the Tyrrell’s English chips. I have always had a super soft spot for cheese flavored potato chips and these were so incredibly delicious that I may have tried to hide them from my children to hoard them for myself. I am not a martyr by any means, but I am that mom that will give my children whatever it is that I am eating or drinking if they even remotely appear to be hungry or thirsty. But these chips made me rethink that strategy. Miss Goose snagged a chip and was hooked. She followed me around asking where the bag of those “yummy and delicious cheddar chips” was for nearly 20 minutes! I felt like I needed to make a pact with her to stay away from the chips! The salty tang of an aged cheddar combined with the perfect herb for all things potato related (the chive!) is amazing. I am loving these chips and do not want to share with anyone – no matter how adorable their doe eyes may be!
The Hand Cooked English Chips from Tyrrell’s are cooked in small batches to ensure the perfect texture and flavor. I love that, a lot like snowflakes, no two chips are exactly the same. While some like the uniform nature of other chip brands – I wonder to myself what they must do to those potatoes in order to get the consistency in shape. These delightful chips are wonderful as a late night snack or at picnics (if you dare to share!). Learn more about Tyrrell’s English Chips on Facebook and Twitter!
