Do you ever find yourself in snacking rut? And trying new “healthy” snacks as a scary proposition? I know that I do! It’s so easy to run to the store and pick up a box of cheddar bunnies for my girls or a box of granola bars for me to keep at work, never really expanding my horizons or comfort zone. Add to my overall lack of time to hunt for these and random fear of trying new snacks, we have allergies and sensitivities in the family. My girls both can’t have dairy and our youngest has some gluten-sensitivities. So finding an organic/natural, gluten-free, dairy-free, still somewhat healthy snack…is a TALL order. That’s where Healthy Surprise comes in. Each month a box from Healthy Surprise arrives at your door chock full of delicious, gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, natural snacks. They offer three different sized boxes that feed anywhere between one and six people. Prices range from $33/month to $99/month for the Large Box. The good people at Healthy Surprise sent me the starter box to review for all of you!
What did I think?
I don’t know about all of you, but I LOVE getting mail. I mean, real mail, not the bills or random political flyers – honest to goodness, mail – a letter or better yet, a package of goodies! It’s like your birthday once a month when a Healthy Surprise box arrives! The box is filled with many full-sized packages of healthy snacks. My box everything from gluten-free granola, seaweed snack clusters, Beanitos chips, macaroons and even brownies! Going through the box was so much fun – my girls had a blast looking at everything. In all, I had 12 products in my box. I felt that for the money, this was a good price considering they were natural or organic and certified gluten-free and vegan. My two favorites from the box were the Beanitos Chipotle BBQ Black Bean Chips and the Barefruit Crunchy Cinnamon Apple Chips- they were both flavorful and satisfying. I’ve never had either of these brands, but my next trip to the grocery store will include these two on the list. There was only one snack in the whole box that I knew wouldn’t make my “must buy again” list and that was the seaweed sprinkles. For me, the smell was too pungent and I couldn’t get past that. I had several friends sample the seaweed clusters and the responses varied from a love affair where they declared a love of the texture and slight nutty flavor to others that didn’t like it at all, with declarations that it tasted just as they would’ve assumed seaweed would taste.
Seaweed aside, I loved this box. It was a great way to encounter and enjoy brands and products that I usually wouldn’t have given a second glance to in the grocery store. I think it would also be a great time saver for the family on the move who just needs to be able to grab a snack and go.
The snackologists at Healthy Surprise have offered to give one starter box to a Savory Savings reader! Stay tuned for the giveaway that will start March 17, 2013!
