Our family game nights have intensified this month! Now we are introducing strategy games to the mix and teaching the girls skills about math, forethoughts and cleverness! Winning Moves USA, my favorite board game manufacturer has sent us a fun selection of strategy games to start the process – we received Aggravation, Risk and Parcheesi all in exchange for our honest opinions. Looking to increase the fun with your next game night? Check these out!
What did I think?
As always, Winning Moves USA blows me away with their impeccable production of games both classic and brand new. These three games, of course, are classic games that have been around for many years. In fact, when hubby saw Risk in the box, he was so excited! The box says ages 8 and up, and while Ms. Goose is only 6 (and a half as she points out!) she could definitely grasp the concepts of this game. The trick is – the longevity! Risk is one of those games that can go on for hours (or days if you leave it on your table like we may have done since some certain husbands are uber competitive). This reproduction of the 1950’s version is sure to make the strategist in your house a happy one!
The girls’ favorite games out of what we received was Aggravation. In this unique marble moving game, you race around the board to get your marbles from home to base the fastest. You can try using the shortcuts, but risk being sent back – all which resulted in giggles and groans from our girls! This one is rated ages 6 and up, but younger kids (ones who won’t put small pieces in their mouth!) can definitely catch on!
The final strategy game we played as a family was Parcheesi. The girls loved the name and were convinced that the dice cups were cylinders of cheese. This game is rated 8 and up, and I definitely think that is right on. Miss LadyBug (age 5) really just wanted to hang out and play with the dice, while Miss Goose was “getting it”, but it did not hold her attention the way Aggravation had. That being said, hubby and I loved playing Parcheesi again and I fondly remember playing it with my grandmother when I was small. I definitely think that this strategy game is one that we will continue to reintroduce and the girls will be begging for it soon!
