I will admit it: I love math. No, seriously! I do! I was that child who enjoyed honing her math skills by doing extra math problems. My calculus teacher in high school loved to assign us “problem 1- 100, evens only” (because the odds had the answers in the back of the book!) but I would do them all for fun, simply for the challenge! Now I am trying to instill that same love of math to my girls and find that at five and six, they need something a touch more engaging than straight math problems to get the love flowing! So I turned to my favorite educational product resource, Learning Resources to find a way to boost math skills, while keeping the fun up, too! I received 10 on the Spot, a math game, in exchange for my honest opinion.
What did I think?
This math skills game from Learning Resources is another win in their column! Featuring cute cartoon ladybugs all with numbers on their spots, children are challenged to fill their spots by adding the number on the ladybug to a spot to equal 10. For example, if your ladybug’s open spot has a two on it, you need to get a spot with the eight. You can play this competitively, by flipping spots one at a time and having whoever is the fastest to grab it – first one to fill their ladybug, wins! Or, the first few times we played, we played cooperatively. We each had a ladybug and as we went through the game, we would figure out what would get us to 10 (phrasing it different each time as to get them used to the different math terms) and then finding who needed that number.
I love that this game is helping build their math skill confidence and is fun, too! While one side of the ladybug features ten-frame to help younger children visually see and count (if needed) to get to 10. Once they have that mastered, flip the cards over for a more challenging version with just numbers!
The Learning Resources 10 on the Spot math skills game is the perfect way to start math engagement with children from kindergarten on up! My girls will come home from school and pull this game out to play together and have been attempting to create new rules to add further fun and challenge to it! I love seeing that their skills are growing so much that they can push themselves further!
